Switzerland - Rochers de Naye & Lake Geneva (★★★★★)

These pages will be mostly used to describe British walks, but I do sometimes venture abroad and will also add interesting walks further afield to this site.

This was the second of three days on the continent, having walked the Seine through Paris on the previous day, and planning to walk Strasbourg on the following day.

My morning began with an early departure from Paris where I had stayed overnight and then in the morning I took the train to Lausanne and then on round to Montruex to then head up the funicular railway to Rochers de Naye.

Rochers de Naye

I'm not familiar with Switzerland and so I don't know the best ways to look up walks or walking terrain an so for this one my plan was just to take the train up to the highest point and then have a bit of a potter about - rather than to do any major walking.

Heading up on the Train

Rochers de Naye is a mountain in the Alps that overlooks Lake Geneva and this railway is taking me up to the summit station at just shy of 2000 meters above sea level - which is about 50% higher up than the top of Ben Nevis.

At the top you can head out in a few directions and there are a series of very easy walks to follow up near the summit - or longer walks if you are up for a bit of mountain walking. Since I was on holiday, I was happy just to do each and every one of the short paths out from the summit.

My first choice was to head round to Jadrin Alpin La Rambertia, after which a sign advises that you should only head on if you have a good head for heights - but this route was the best for looking out across the rest of the Alps.

Through a gap in the rock

At this point I'm making these sound like walks, but each of these routes out are really only about 10-15 minutes of walking, before you turn round and head back to the main area - and much of that time is spent looking out rather than walking.

Next up it was time to head up the hill to the Observation Deck, which on a clear day has amazing views out over Lake Geneva - but whilst today the skies were clear up here - cloud was sitting below blocking the view of the surroundings.

Since there is no lake to look over might as well look at the mountains again

Finally it was time to hear further round on the far side to Point de vue Rochers de Naye for my final video of the day.

From here it was time to head back to the main area an whilst I hadn't exactly walked very far in my time here, I did spend a few hours here just enjoying the quiet and scenery.

I loved this visit and think it offers a great way to visit the Alps without all the difficulty of getting up them - at some point I plan to come back and repeat this visit again, whilst also visiting other spots further along through Switzerland like Interlaken.

Lake Geneva

Eventually it was time to head back down to Montreux and then from there it was a pretty train ride along Lake Geneva to Lausanne, where I would be staying over.

Having spent quite some time up at Rochers de Naye it was getting later in the day, but after checking in there was still time to walk through Lausanne and down to the lakeside.

From here it was a case of walking round the lake and just taking in the last light of the day.

Further round the lake

Definitely not the longest pair of walks that will get added to this site, but these spots were definitely well worth a visit - what an amazing day.
